Background of the study
Media platforms are crucial in the preservation and propagation of linguistic heritage. In Nigeria, political debates broadcast on television, radio, and digital channels serve not only as arenas for political contestation but also as vehicles for cultural preservation. In Yoruba political debates, media representation plays a significant role in maintaining the usage of Yoruba by providing a platform where traditional expressions are showcased alongside modern discourse (Akinola, 2023). However, varying editorial practices and the trend toward linguistic simplification for mass appeal may lead to the dilution of rich, culturally embedded vocabulary. This study examines how media influences the preservation of Yoruba in political debates by analyzing broadcast content, debate transcripts, and audience feedback. It aims to determine whether media practices contribute to maintaining linguistic integrity or inadvertently foster a homogenized version of Yoruba, thereby impacting cultural continuity (Oluwole, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite media’s potential to uphold Yoruba linguistic traditions, political debates often exhibit inconsistent and simplified language that undermines cultural richness. This variability in media representation leads to the loss of traditional expressions and may hinder efforts to preserve Yoruba as a vibrant medium of political communication (Akinola, 2023).
